Every family is different and so are their life style situations. Some have jobs that take them away from home for days and months at a time. Others work long hours or conflicting hours. But they are still families and need to maintain communication as a way to bond and stay strong.

There are many ways to find a special way to communicate and bond as a family unit and for those who have little or no time every moment counts when they are together. Even with miles or time lines separating them it only takes a small effort to let your spouse and children know you are thinking of them and provide special memories.

If you are a family separated by miles you need to maintain an open line of communication and provide a special connection. This is done through phone calls most of the time, but for something special that builds a family history find something different than the normal phone call.

Surprise children with pictures and post cards from your location with instructions to build a scrapbook for later discussions when you arrive home. Post cards, photos and pictures you draw will create a story and sense of belonging for everyone. It doesn’t have to be much. Draw a picture of animals you see, an outline of where you live or a cartoon figure of someone near you with a funny caption.

Letters, cards and stories you write yourself are welcome and provide a smile or great laugh for the one receiving them. Your story does not have to be long or very detailed. Use your childhood make believe and write a short story with just a few paragraphs pertaining to elephants playing golf in the backyard of your living quarters. Any story will do as long as it brings a smile to the face of a loved one.

For the family separated by different working hours you can hang a chalk board in a main room. This is not just for daily chores and reminders. It is also for funny little drawings, love notes and a simple happy face to remind someone you love them. Use the board to relay a secret message about an upcoming event for the family or where a gift is hidden. This communication creates a bond and a great history for everyone in the family.

Plan time together whenever possible. Use the time wisely. Do not argue or talk about problems unless it is very important. Plan a family dinner and movie night at home or plan to take everyone or your spouse out for some special time together. It doesn’t have to be expensive as long as you are together and talking with each other.

Vacations are some of the best times spent together for bonding when there is so little time in the rest of your lifestyle. Do not bring work with you or use the cell phone to check up on your job. This is time with your family. Plan a trip away from home. Discuss what everyone would like and enjoy yourself.

A family camping trip does not have to be difficult. There are a great number of campgrounds throughout the world catering to families with children. You can choose your destination depending on everyone’s likes and dislikes. Many campgrounds provide stores, swimming pools, fishing areas, history trails and so much more. Explore the outdoors and teach your children a little about your own childhood at this time. They love stories of your youth or their own.

Anything you do together as a family in the few spare moments you can grab should be low stress and lots of smiles and laughter. Making a family history of memories is important whatever kind of family you are.
